Describe your current role and what attracted you to it.
I am a Solicitor, qualified in England and Wales, working as an associate in the banking team at the international law firm CMS. I work on corporate and leveraged financings, for private equity clients, lenders, and borrowers in the technology, media, and communications sector. I chose this role because I enjoy working in a high-paced transactional environment among motivated and supportive teammates.
What are the key skills you learnt at Warwick that have helped you with your career to date?
Firstly, resilience, which is something required in my career on a daily basis. Warwick taught me how to balance my degree, extracurricular activities, and a part-time job, and the multitasking helps me perform better in my profession. The social skills, cultural sensitivity, and commercial awareness, which I acquired at the University are also invaluable both in my career and beyond.
Did you have a specific career path in mind when you chose to study at Warwick?
Yes, I soon decided to pursue a career in commercial law.
What top tips do you have for Warwick graduates who would like to work in your sector?
Keep trying, even if you encounter rejections. Understand that it is okay to be on a different timeline to your peers and have faith in yourself - you will reach your dream career, even if it takes you longer and you take detours on the way. Remain open-minded and try new things - you might end up finding something you enjoy doing even more.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I work from the office three or four days a week. On days when I go to the office, I wake up around 6am and go to the gym. I have a quick breakfast at home and check my work emails while I walk to the office. I am lucky enough to live only 30 minutes on foot from the City of London. I get to the office and log on around 9:30am. I grab a quick lunch at the office canteen around 12:30, usually with friends from my trainee intake. My typical working day will include a few calls or in person meetings, emails with the clients, foreign counsel, and other teams within the firm, legal drafting and some legal research. I usually leave the office around 7pm to have dinner at home. During busy periods, I continue working after dinner for a few hours; during quieter periods, I make plans with friends or relax at home.
