Trailblazing global history 2007-2010
The early 2000s brought with them new approaches to historical writing. Among these, 'global history' was a diverse mix of approaches that overall challenged national histories and traditional area studies. Born in 2007 with a trailblazing vocation, the Global History and Culture Centre pioneered debates around the global approach. In these initial years, the GHCC spearheaded these reflections, led by the then-director Professor Maxine Berg.
The 'Global Conversations' (2009) event, held at the British Academy, helped establish global history as a discipline on its own. Entitled 'Writing the History of the Global: Challenges for the 21st century', it brought together many influential historians to reflect on the concept of the 'global' and the challenges this approach poses for the writing of history in the 21st century.
