Screening Rights Film Festival - Queer Archives and Reenactments in Lebanon and Brazil

Tickets are out for the 10th edition of the Screening Rights Film FestivalLink opens in a new window (@ScreeningrightsfilmfestLink opens in a new window): DOUBLE BILL, screening political, social and innovative cinema from the Global South on the 17th-20th of October in Birmingham and Coventry.

On the opening night of its 10th anniversary, Screening Rights is staging a special event at Warwick Arts Centre centred around queer archives and reenactments from Lebanon and Brazil and featuring May Ziadé’s short Neo Nahda alongside Gil Baroni’s feature Casa Izabel. Equal parts vivid reconstruction and ingenious fictionalisation of the narratives that have been suppressed or underrepresented due to the turbulent histories of the Middle East and Latin America, Ziadé’s and Baroni’s films, each in their unique way, outline queer genealogies and combat epistemic oblivion.
More from the organisers:
"Join us for a program with films from different geographical contexts side-by-side, illustrating the commonality of all our struggles and resistances. With this, we aim to promote South-to-South solidarity through mutual (un)learning between countries and populations in East and West Asia, East Africa, and Latin America on the one hand, and those in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the South Caucasus on the other.

Our aim is to explore how we can stand in intersectional solidarity with one another in times of apartheid, disinformation and haunting oppressions. That's why we'd like to make this festival not only an educational event, but also a community gathering – and for this we need your support, too! Join us at one of the events, bring your thoughts and feelings, tell your friends and help us spread the word far and wide. Tickets go to cover costs, support our panelists and filmmakers. We've got promo codes available (reply to this message to request yours), and if you can't afford the price or would like to invite someone who can't – don't hesitate to get in touch, we have some free tickets set aside so the event can be accessible to all.

Some films programmed this year include Kamal Aljafari's Paradiso, XXXI,108, Shoghakat Vardanyan's 1489, Alisa Berger’s Three Borders or May Ziadé’s Neo Nahda. The festival will span both online (in collaboration with Grand Union) and in-person events across 4 days in Coventry and Birmingham – at MAC Birmingham, Warwick Arts Centre and the Coventry Transport Museum."
