Past events
Only a small proportion of the events that the Modern Records Centre participates in are captured for posterity. The recorded talks below provide a snapshot of some of the work that we do in this area.
The Miners' Strike 40 Years On: Mining the Archives
On 15 May 2024 the Marx Memorial Library hosted a panel discussion on why and how archivists and historians preserve the heritage of the 1984/5 Miners' Strike. Speakers included the MRC's NUM Project Archivist Liz Wood, MML Archivist Matt Dunne, and historian Professor Keith Gildart. A recording of the event can be viewed through the MML's website.
The MRC@50
The MRC at 50 was a celebratory symposium held on 20 September 2023 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Modern Records Centre. The event featured talks from students, early career researchers, senior academics and one of the MRC's original founders. Topics ranged from Higher Education, Latin America, trades unions in Britain and abroad, healthcare, and cycling. Many of the talks are available to listen online.
Commemorating British Labour History: Foundations and Future Plans
On 6 July 2023 a joint seminar was held by the Modern Records Centre, Marx Memorial Library and South Wales Miners' Library, and included talks on the organisations' histories, current work and future plans. It was recorded and can be viewed through the website of the Marx Memorial Library.
